How to Pack Books Safely for Courier Shipping

Updated 2026-09-07 · 6 min read

Courier parcels in India get stacked, thrown into sorting bins, and occasionally left outside in weather during transfer between hubs. Books survive this fine if packed properly, and get damaged easily if they're not. This guide is written for sellers shipping an order after a sale is paid for.

What actually damages books in transit

Corners bend and covers crease when a book is loose inside an oversized box and shifts around during handling. Spines crack when books are packed standing on their spine edge and something heavy is placed on top. Pages get water-damaged when parcels sit outside during a transfer in the rain and the outer packaging isn't sealed against moisture — this is a real risk during monsoon months especially.

Step-by-step packing process

  1. Wrap each book individually in a plastic sheet or a sealed poly bag — this is your main defence against moisture and rain exposure during transit.
  2. For a single book or a small stack, use a corrugated cardboard box sized close to the book's dimensions rather than a large box with empty space around it — loose books shift and get damaged.
  3. Fill any remaining gaps with crumpled paper or bubble wrap so the books can't move inside the box.
  4. Place books flat, stacked on their covers, not standing on their spines, and avoid placing anything heavy on top inside the box.
  5. Seal all edges of the box firmly with packing tape, including a strip across the middle seam where boxes usually split open.
  6. Write the order reference clearly on the outside, and keep your own printed or handwritten note of the order number in case the courier's label gets damaged.

If you don't have a proper box

A padded envelope works for one or two thin books, but wrap the books in plastic first regardless, since padded envelopes aren't waterproof. For multiple books, it's worth asking a local stationery or courier shop for a used but sturdy box rather than shipping in a flimsy one — a box that collapses under stacking weight defeats the purpose of packing carefully in the first place.

After you've packed and shipped

Once you hand the parcel to the courier, update the order with the courier name and the tracking number so the buyer (and you) can follow it at /track. Keep the courier's receipt until the order is marked completed — if a delivery dispute comes up, that receipt is your proof of when and how the parcel was shipped.
